Giving back this holiday season

Upstate Oasis volunteers spread holiday joy one holiday candy box at a time

This past Monday Oasis former Leadership Team member Nancy George and current Leadership Team members Eileen Deuell, Rona Edlund, Mary Jernigan and Melissa Sheremeta gathered to create candy boxes to donate to the Salvation Army Homeless Shelter for Women. This tradition began ~10 years ago when then Leadership Team member Nancy learned origami and specifically began making boxes. She shared her talent with the Leadership Team, and they decided they wanted to use this skill to give back to the community but weren’t sure how. Marjorie Carter, both an Oasis Advisory Council member and on the Salvation Army Advisory Board at the time, suggested filling them with candy and donating them to the Salvation Army Homeless Shelter for Woman; thus, beginning this holiday tradition.

Starting in late November, a call is put out to Leadership Team members to bring in candy for the boxes which paper craft extraordinaires Nancy and Melissa make ahead of time. Then, the team comes together to fill and deliver the boxes, sharing a little bit of holiday cheer along the way.

Wishing everyone joy, peace and happiness this holiday season.
